New Sicily-Themed Silpo Store Opened in Mykolaiv 04.08.2020
New Silpo store in Mykolaiv, located at 259/1 Tsentralnyi Avenue (Pivdennyi Buh mall), showcases olive trees, a Sicilian cart, balconies with drying clothes, and a car of a gangster, who arrived to Vitelli bar.

“Mykolaiv is a southern city of Ukraine, and it is here that we decided, through a new Silpo, to show the vivid history of the south of Italy, the island of Sicily. In addition to the colorful patterns and symbols of this island, we also paid tribute to the legendary Italian mafia. The Godfather, Cosa Nostra, Commissioner Cattani, who fights the organized mafia – these are the stories which follow you everywhere in this part of the world. Our customers will also see many interesting puzzles and signs. For example, navigation signs in this Silpo are made in the form of small fish, maybe it's flocks of fish in the blue sea or maybe it’s a sign of mafia,” explains Silpo’s Marketing Director Kateryna Ohuriaieva.

The entrance to the Silpo is decorated with the traditional red and yellow colors of the flag and an important symbol of Sicily, Trinacria. A female head framed by three legs is a symbol of Gorgoneion Medusa used as a talisman in houses by the locals. Three legs running in one direction symbolize the three capes of the island of Sicily, the change of seasons, day and night, and the dynamics and cyclical nature of life.

The whole Silpo store is adorned with bright ornaments of flowers, lemons, traditional patterns and the main symbols of Sicily, which convey the emotions of this southern Italian island. The red painted cart stands in the Fruit and Veg section. Under to the ceiling, there is a huge stone sun with a twinkling eye, which was specially left unpainted to emphasize the age and authenticity of the island and the history of Sicily. Large painted plates with yellow-blue-and-green ornaments hang above the sections of Lavka Tradytsii, ready food, and fish. Such traditional ceramics in Sicily usually decorate the facades of houses, apartments, and city streets in order to bring warmth and colorfulness. There you can also see other features of the sunny, picturesque and sweet island of Sicily – olive trees, greens and plants in the original pots, in particular, lemon and orange trees, colorful images of cobbled streets, cute Sicilian balconies with hanging clothes, and rooftops.

However, there are secrets that Sicily can hide fr om the average tourist. The island is famous as “the cradle of the Italian mafia." The walls of the store with black and white illustrations bring attention to this story. In the Cinzano cafe inside the supermarket, you can see the entrance to the famous bar Vitelli, wh ere The Godfather, one of the most famous movies about mafia, was filmed. Nearby, there is Corleone’ black car against a wall that depicts the most famous mobsters: Al Capone, Don Corleone, and Lucky Luciano gathered in their favorite bar Vitelli.
